Dr. Mario Murgia

Mario Murgia es poeta, traductor literario y catedrático de literatura inglesa, traducción y literatura comparada. Sus intereses son temáticamente variados y muchas veces han girado en torno a la relación entre la literatura y otras expresiones artísticas, como la música y las artes escénicas. Su principal área de investigación académica es el drama y la poesía anglófona e hispana del siglo XX y la Edad Moderna, con especial énfasis en la poesía inglesa y española (colonial) producida en los siglos XVI y XVII.

Como único miltonista mexicano, Murgia ha publicado ediciones comentadas en español de la Mascarada de John Milton (Comus, Axial, 2013), Areopagitica (Areopagítica, UNAM, 2009) y The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates (El título de reyes y magistrados, UNAM, 2012). También ha participado en la primera edición mexicana de Dubliners (Dublineses) de James Joyce (2015), que se suma a sus diversas traducciones al español de la poesía, el drama y la prosa de autores como Barry Callaghan, Alfred Corn, Robert Graves, Ben Mazer, Edgar Allan Poe, Adrienne Rich y Dylan Thomas, entre muchos otros. También tradujo la Antología de cuentos escoceses contemporáneos (Anthology of Contemporary Scottish Short Stories, UNAM, 2015) y actualmente está trabajando en las traducciones de los sonetos de Milton, así como, de Shakespeare, Cymbeline, Double Falsehood y Henry VIII.

El libro de Murgia Versos escritos en agua: la influencia de El Paraíso Perdido en Byron, Keats y Shelley (Lines Writ in Water: The Influence of Paradise Lost on Byron, Keats, and Shelley, UNAM, invierno 2015) intenta explicar cómo la figura del Satanás de Milton fue adaptada y sublimada en la poesía de los llamados “románticos ingleses de la segunda generación”. Su volumen Singularly Remote: Essays on Poetry (MadHat Books, 2018) cubre una amplia gama de temas, desde el problema de la formación del canon, hasta la poesía de los modernistas mexicanos y la retórica de Geoffrey Hill. Sus ensayos literarios han sido publicados en Iberoamérica Global (Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén, 2008); Anuario de Letras Modernas (UNAM, 2016); el Hopkins Quarterly (2011); el Milton Quarterly (2016); así como en libros de Oxford University Press y Wiley-Blackwell, por nombrar solo algunos ejemplos.

El libro de poesía más reciente de Murgia se titula El mundo perdone (México 2018), y su obra poética ha aparecido en publicaciones como Caminos Inciertos (España, 2010), Emanations: Second Sight (EEUU, 2012 y 2021), The Battersea Review (EE. UU., 2015), Letras libres (México, 2020) y Beltway Poetry (EE. UU., 2021). Murgia es coeditor, con Angelica Duran, del volumen Global Milton and Visual Art (Lexington Books, 2021). También compiló y editó la antología Cardos y Lluvia. Poesía escocesa contemporánea (UNAM, 2019). Una de las publicaciones más recientes de Murgia es La hoja verde de la lengua. Poesía angloirlandesa contemporánea (The Green Leaf of Language. Contemporary Anglo-Irish Poetry, UNAM, 2022), volumen electrónico que ha compilado y editado para la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM.

Mario Murgia is a poet, literary translator, and full professor of English, translation, and comparative literature. His interests are thematically varied and have often revolved around the relationship between literature and other artistic expressions, such as music and the performing arts. His main area of academic research is Anglophone and Hispanophone drama and poetry from the twentieth century and the Early Modern period, with a particular emphasis on English and (Colonial) Spanish poetry produced in the 16th and 17th centuries.

As Mexico’s only Miltonist, Murgia has published annotated Spanish editions of John Milton’s Maske (Comus, Axial, 2013), Areopagitica (Areopagítica, UNAM, 2009) and The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates (El título de reyes y magistrados, UNAM, 2012). He has also participated in the first-ever Mexican edition of James Joyce’s Dubliners (2015), which adds to his various Spanish translations of the poetry, drama, and prose of authors such as Barry Callaghan, Robert Graves, Edgar Allan Poe, Adrienne Rich, and Dylan Thomas, among many others. He also recently translated Antología de cuentos escoceses contemporáneos (Anthology of Contemporary Scottish Short Stories, UNAM, 2015) and is currently working on the translations of Milton’s sonnets as well as Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, Double Falsehood, and Henry VIII.

Murgia’s book Versos escritos en agua: la influencia de El Paraíso Perdido en Byron, Keats y Shelley (Lines Writ in Water: The Influence of Paradise Lost on Byron, Keats, and Shelley, UNAM, winter 2015) attempts to explain how the figure of Milton’s Satan was adapted and sublimated in the poetry of the so-called younger Romantics. His volume Singularly Remote: Essays on Poetry (MadHat Books, 2018) covers a wide range of topics, from the problem of canon formation, to the poetry of the Mexican Modernistas and the rhetoric of Geoffrey Hill. Murgia’s most recent book of poetry is entitled El mundo perdone (May the World Forgive) (Mexico 2018), and his poetical works have appeared in publications such as Caminos Inciertos (Spain, 2010), Emanations: Second Sight (USA, 2012), and The Battersea Review (USA, 2015), Letras libres (México, 2020), and Beltway Poetry (EE. UU., 2021). Murgia is co-editor, with Angelica Duran, of the volume Global Milton and Visual Art (Lexington Books, 2021). He also compiled and edited the anthology Cardos y Lluvia. Poesía escocesa contemporánea (Thistles and Rain. Contemporary Scottish Poetry, UNAM, 2019). One of Murgia’s most recent publications is The Green Leaf of Language. Contemporary Anglo-Irish Poetry (UNAM, 2022), an e-volume which he has compiled and edited for UNAM’s School of Philosophy and Literature.
